Three Tours Tetzlaff

updated 1/5/05

In 1965, Harold (Harry) Tetzlaff came to Korea, assigned to the 2146th Communications Group. He spent his year and left. But Harry missed Korea ...

... so he returned in 1970 and this time hung around for a couple of years. After leaving in 1973, Harry still had a hunger (Kimchi craving?) for Korea and he returned in 1975 for another year. Some of the photos show a 1978 date, so Harry apparently still felt the need to return for visits.

Although, as the photos indicate, Harry has many memories of Korea, the one that stands out in his mind is the "Great Fire of 1971." This was the fire that destroyed the sprawling Quonset hut complex that made up the Wing Headquarters. Harry played a major role in the cause of the fire, as he describes in this extract from our Guestbook, fifth entry on third from last page:

"I have a lot of memories from those years. One that most anybody stationed there in 1971 would remember is the fire that burned the headquarters building down. The work order that started that fire was my idea, to have an emergency exit door installed in our office in case of fire. That may be hard to believe but it is the truth, a work order to install a fire door started the fire that destroyed nearly the whole complex."
