Feedback hear ye, hear ye, hear ye
Feedback contains information on updates and some background information that might be of interest to some readers. It also has comments from web site readers that might have wider interest than just to me. To that end, and to possibly prevent having to respond to the same questions and comments again and again, this page provides responses that answer some of your questions, even some you've not yet asked. Be forewarned that I write for enjoyment as well as for enlightenment, and hope that you'll appreciate my humor. If not, then send me a comment and maybe I'll post it here. Or maybe not.

As with other areas where I post items of interest, I'll include dates and have the newest first so you don't have to go scrolling through a lot of "old news" (is that an oxymoron?). To speed up page loading, entries have been divided by year, with larger years' entries split.

September 17, 2002 – Osan Info Problems Fixed
The Hit Counter on the Osan Info page has been fixed. The map background on the Songtan City page (interactive map of hotels) has been fixed. I owe an apology to Gene (see below May 2, 2002 comment). When I was testing the page on my home system, I failed to realize that even accessing the web site, the software would take the map from my computer if it could not download it from the web site. I realized the problem when I was testing the site access on another home computer and also on the office computer. Neither could display the Songtan map background, so I knew the problem was mine. Sorry for doubting you, Gene. (If you can see the hit counter but not the map background, click on the "Refresh" button to download a map image.)

Just in case you care, the problems were fixed by acquiring FrontPage 2002 and connecting with it to the web host to enable the FrontPage Server Extensions.

July 13, 2002 – RAO-Osan Off the Air Jul 9-12
A water pipe burst above the computer center of the RAO-Osan web site hosting service (in Ft Myers, FL), destroying the computer on which RAO-Osan files were stored. A new computer had to be installed along with the web hosting software after the computer room environmental problems were solved. Once that was done, all the RAO-Osan files had to be uploaded to the new computer and tested for correct operations. For details on the computer room events of Jul 9 and following, see this account.

Because Feature Price, the provider, guarantees service, they have provided one month of free service for each of the three days the site was unavailable. So you know that RAO-Osan is good through at least March 2003. But rest assured that I intend to keep this site active and regularly updated with information you can use into the unforeseeable future.

June 30, 2002 – Comments from Bob
I went through your pictures of Osan AB on the web site. The following pictures are obsolete: Barber Shop, Mexican Restaurant, Mini-Mall, Post Office and Video Bookstore.

Feedback from Jack: The pictures you were viewing were from the section labeled 1997-98 pictures of Osan AB. I want to keep them for "historical" reference. But you are right, the facilities are no longer at the locations shown and the La Cantina Restaurant has ceased to exist.

You have a picture captioned "Songtan City." There is no such animal. Songtan City became part of Pyeongtaek City maybe five years ago. The article accompanying the picture, explains that Songtan City is actually part of P... In the interest of accuracy,  I'd simply rename the picture to "Songtan."

The link for Interactive Map to Songtan Hotels only brings up a  light blue field.

Under the History of Osan AB, it says that the name Osan means "Crow Hill." Not being an expert on the Korean language, it seems to bear no resemblance to the Korean word for Crow. When I was studying Korean many years ago the instructor said that the name meant "five hills(mtns)."  This whole area being nothing but small hills, many leveled.

Feedback from Jack: The use of Songtan City is intentional. There are many of us old- timers who are loathe to let it go. We feel there was a travesty because the voting to incorporate was done by residents of both Songtan City and Pyeongtaek City. We were outnumbered at least two to one, and the lure of additional tax money going into Pyeongtaek's coffers made their urge to vote in favor a foregone conclusion. In the words of the old rebel soldier, " Forget? Hell!" I felt that the explanation provided was sufficient for interested folks to know that it's no longer Songtan City ... no need to rub salt in the wounds of those of us who were here to rejoice when CITY status was bestowed on our little ol' ville, then known as Songtan-up (village).

As far as the hotel map not appearing, it sounds like you have not installed the browser add-on to run JavaScipt programs. That's what's needed to get the interactive map to work. (If anyone has a better answer, I'd like to know -- I'm still a neophyte in other than basic web paging.)

Regarding the name, you have to look at the Hanja (Chinese) characters to determine the meaning of the name. I know for a fact that O-san does not mean "five hills." That's a simple literal translation of the Hangul characters (O= five and san=mountain). When I first started to learn the Hanja, that was one thing I checked.  The "O" Hanja character in O-san is not the same "O" as the Hanja character for the number 5. Your instructor may not have been fluent in Hanja.

May 2, 2002 – Comments from Jack (me)
Why are there "reserved" areas at the bottom of the first screen of Osan Info? There are plenty of free programs available to perform these tasks.

Feedback from Jack: I am a do-it-yourself kind of guy. Wherever possible, I like to learn how to do something and then do it. With luck, it will be successful. So I have to learn how to program in Perl. I won't be starting from scratch because there are free example programs available that can be customized to a particular site. The other reason is that I don't like advertising stuff cluttering up a site. That's why I opted for a commercial web hosting service instead of taking "advantage" (whose?) of the free services offered. It's clutter-free. So as I learn how to do a Hit Counter, a Guestbook and an Osan Date/Time (e.g., I am in Korea, the server is in Florida, you may be logging on from Germany, how do I properly convert and display Osan time to you?), these will appear. And hopefully they'll work and you'll like them.
