Identity Theft, Fraud, Prevention and Repair

 

The Federal Trade Commission recommends the following four steps if you suspect suspicious activities.

 

1.  Contact the fraud department of one of the three major credit bureaus:

2.  Close any accounts that have been tampered with or opened fraudulently.

 

3.  File a police report with your local police or in the community where the identity theft took place.

 

4.  File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission by using the FTC’s identity theft hotline:

     By mail at Identity Clearinghouse, Federal Trade Commission, 600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW,

     Washington DC 20580 

 

What you should know about the National Do Not Call Registry

 

The National Do Not Call Registry gives you a choice whether to receive telemarketing calls at home.

 Most telemarketers should not call your number once it has been on the registry for 31 days.

 If they do, you can file a complaint at this website https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx

 You can register your home or mobile phone for free. Your registration will be effective for five years.

 

How to OPT-OUT

 

The three major credit bureaus have different requirements on how to OPT-OUT.  The national credit bureaus offer a toll-free number that enable you to OPT-OUT of all credit card offers with just one phone call  DSN 449-1110 – 1-800-567-8688
