The 2006 annual membership meeting of the United States Military Retirees Association was held on Saturday, September 30, 2006 from 1000-1200 at the Army Community Services building on Yongsan's South Post. Attendance was less than expected or hoped for with no more than 15 retirees and in attendance.
The guest speaker was COL Greg Jolissaint, Commander of the 18th Medical Command. He provided a very informative briefing on the future of medical care in Korea. Of particular interest was his support for "the German model" of TRICARE support to provide TRICARE Prime to retirees and others who are currently in a space available status for medical care.
Jack Terwiel of the Osan AB Retiree Activities Office provided d a briefing to update retirees on legislative developments in 2006 and information on changes to dental and optometric care at Osan AB.
Mr. Tim Spann talked to the retirees about the upcoming Korea-wide Retiree Appreciation Day on Oct 14. Then Mr. Al McFarland, the EUSA Mortuary Officer, reminded retirees that they must have a current passport and valid visa. The Korean government has cracked down in death cases where the retiree lacked either a valid visa, or a valid passport with valid visa. In these cases the survivors must pay a fine in order for the body to be released for burial or cremation, either in Korea or for return to the U.S. or other country.
Remember that these officers cannot do all that needs to be done — nor should they be expected to do it all. The USMRAK needs your support if we want retiree living conditions to improve as a result of positive policy and command support to all retirees and widows living in Korea.
